A gas rebate card may seem like they are saving you money on gas but you need to understand how they work and read all of the fine print. The introductory offers are always quite good but once those offers end you will need to get a bit creative to keep receiving good rebates using a gas card. The main point of the gas rebate card is that you can save when buying gas from specific gas stations or retailers.
Many times the rebate will only last for a few months. The gas rebate on chase’s MasterCard at 6% savings is only good for 90 days. When the 90 days are up the rebate drops to 3%. None of the terms or conditions are fixed when using credit cards. The credit card companies are a business and they need to make a profit. There are even instances of when specific cards that offered gas rebates were only being used to purchase gas so the company changed the terms and conditions.
Gas rebate cars also tend to be paired with specific gas stations so you will only receive a gas discount if you purchase gas from the specified dealers. Many times this is not a problem but determine if that dealer is one you would regularly go to or if you have to drive further. The extra driving may add more gas onto your drive, which would erase any savings. Additionally gas rebate cards tend to have very high interest rates so you do not want to carry a balance on those cards.
Many times you will have to make a request for the rebate and if you do not request it then you it can disappear after about 6 months. It is possible to be creative and save quite a bit on gas but this can take some time to figure out.
For example it is possible to buy a gas card, such as a $50 card for about $48. But to purchase the card you use a rebate card that offers a rebate on all gas station purchases, say about 5% rebate. So altogether that may be about an 8% discount, which can save you about 26 cents per gallon if gas is above $3 a gallon. In the long run gas rebate cards are not as great as they first appear.
